Backpacking Gear List

Now that the weather is warming up I've been preparing to hit the trails again - the foot trails. Since my pack is already loaded for training I decided to do a walk through of my gear for moderate and warm weather backpacking. This is just what I carry and is based on personal preference. Its not for everyone and its subject to change.

Here goes:

  • Trail
  • Shelter and Sleeping (Depending on conditions and what appeals to me at the time I may sleep in a tent or hammock so i'll list both):
    • REI Half Dome 2 man Tent (Note: I pack the tent, fly, and footprint in the stuff sack inside my pack and the poles and stakes outside my pack)
    • Hammock, Rainfly, Bug Net from Chill Gorilla. These are affordable and have been very reliable so far.
    • Ground Hog Tent Stakes 
    • REI 30 degree mummy bag - I don't know the actual model
    • Big Agnes Q-core sleeping pad
    • InstaCamp inflatable pillow
  • Water and Water Treatment
    • Nalgene 48 oz. water bottle (WATER ONLY)
    • Plastic Bottloed Water bottle (for use with drink mixes)
    • Lifeunion 10 Liter Collapsible Water Container  (For family or group trips) 
    • Sawyer Products Mini Water Filtration System - My set up uses a repurposed Platypus bladder and tube fashioned into a gravity system.
  • Food and Cooking (Depending on the trip my stove selection may vary).
    • MSR Whisperlite Universal Stove (Often configured for Iso fuel but for cold weather and large groups configured for white gas)
    • Primus EtaExpress Stove System 
    • GSI Soloist and/or GSI Minimalist cook kits combined 
    • GSI scraper
    • Snow Peak Titanium Spork
    • GSI Outdoors Glacier Stainless Bottle Cup/Pot
    • Stuff sack and paracord with carabiner for hanging food (PCT hang)
    • One gallon ZipLoc bags for food organization and trash
    • Dinner (I prefer Mountain House over any other brand of premade i have tried)
    • Lunch (Typically something grab and go like Clif Bars, nuts, or cheese. Occasionally ramen because it cooks very fast)
    • Breakfast (oatmeal packets)
    • Drinks (Water, Water, Water, individual Country Time Lemonade packets, individual instant coffee packets)
    • Snacks (Clif Bars or something similar, GORP, beef jerkey, individual SPAM, individually wrapped cheese sticks)
  • First Aid
    • Adventure Medical Kits - Ultralight 0.5 Solo First (if travelling alone)
    • Adventure Medical Kits - Ultralight and Watertight .9 First Aid Kit (if not travelling alone)
    • Gold Bond Friction Defense
    • Boudreaux's Butt Paste Diaper Rash Ointment (in a 1 oz plastic jar) - incase the above doesn't work... when you need it you need it!
    • WiseWays Herbals All Heal Salve (in a 1 oz plastic jar)
    • hand sanitizer
  • Tools and Utility
    • Gerber Paraframe knife
    • Black Diamond Spot Headlamp - 300 Lumen 
    • Extra batteries (new batteries wrapped with rubber bands to distinquish the difference)
    • Gerber Dime multitool
    • Repair kit (Thread, needle, duct tape, vinyl patch, Super glue)
    • Lighter
    • Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel 2.0
    • UST WetFire Tinder
  • Clothing and Insulation (Obviously dependent on weather/climate)
    • Convertible Hiking Pants
    • T-Shirt

    • Cheap sunglasses (I always lose them so I never spend much money on them)
    • Athletic socks (fresh! Not worn out)

    • All neatly contained in a one gallon ziploc bag and stuff sack for easy grab and go.... so to speak.
